Quality Manager – Defence equipment

Overview

Express Recruitment are recruiting for a Quality Manager to join an established engineering business who supply equipment in the defence industry. This is an opportunity to take ownership of quality assurance and quality control, ensuring components and finished products meet exacting technical standards and customer specifications.

Working closely with engineering, purchasing and external suppliers, you will develop the Quality Management System, drive continuous improvement and strengthen supply chain performance. This role would suit a technically minded quality professional with experience in light engineering, ISO 9001 and supplier auditing.

Skills & Experience
  • Relevant engineering qualification and experience within a light engineering environment
  • Good understanding of manufacturing and finishing processes
  • Previous quality management and auditing experience, including practical knowledge of ISO 9001
  • Ability to interpret complex engineering drawings and technical specifications
  • Experience using inspection equipment
  • Strong working knowledge of quality and continuous improvement frameworks, including APQP, PPAP, Kanban, Kaizen and Six Sigma
  • Proven project management experience and a methodical approach to problem-solving
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build effective relationships with colleagues, customers and suppliers
  • Ability to work independently within a small team, with strong attention to detail
  • Good Microsoft Office skills; knowledge of SAP and purchasing functions would be advantageous
  • Willingness to travel internationally and to customer and supplier sites
  • Valid, clean UK driving licence and valid UK passport
Roles & Responsibilities
  • Manage, maintain and develop the company’s Quality Management System, covering quality assurance and quality control
  • Ensure materials, components and finished products meet relevant standards, engineering drawings and customer specifications
  • Maintain accurate drawing and technical specification libraries
  • Oversee goods inwards inspection and maintain associated records and quality data
  • Manage non-conformances from identification and containment through to investigation, corrective action and closure
  • Conduct root cause analysis using techniques such as 5 Whys and Fishbone diagrams
  • Implement corrective and preventive actions, verifying their effectiveness through audits and follow-up checks
  • Develop and maintain the calibration system for inspection and measuring equipment
  • Conduct internal quality audits and external supplier audits
  • Work with purchasing and suppliers to improve quality, reduce costs and support on-time delivery
  • Provide technical guidance to colleagues, customers and suppliers
