The ideal candidate will hold experience within practice and hold solid experience of managing a caseload of clients and working very closely with carers and other medical professionals. Candidates of all levels of PQE are considered, including those who are newly qualified.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Manage a varied caseload of Court of Protection matters, including deputyship applications, statutory wills, and contested welfare decisions, ensuring all work is handled with care and compliance.
  • Support lay deputies or act as a professional deputy in overseeing the financial and property affairs of clients who lack capacity, often involving complex asset management and care planning.
  • Offer clear and empathetic legal advice to clients, families and professional partners on matters such as mental capacity, best interest decisions and the Mental Capacity Act 2005.
  • Regularly engage with the Office of the Public Guardian, local authorities, care providers and other professionals to ensure the best outcomes for vulnerable clients.
  • Prepare legal documentation and represent clients in Court of Protection proceedings when required, always maintaining a high standard of client service and attention to detail.

Skills & Experience

  • Previous experience handling Court of Protection or mental capacity matters, ideally within a private client or public law setting.
  • Confident working independently on complex and sensitive cases involving vulnerable individuals.
  • Strong understanding of the Mental Capacity Act 2005, the Court of Protection Rules, and the role of deputies and attorneys.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex legal issues in a clear and compassionate way to clients and their families.
  • Organised and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage deadlines, maintain accurate records and handle multiple matters simultaneously.
