Tales of the New Office Manager!

Thinking of a change of career? Do it! As someone who has never worked in an office environment before, I was apprehensive about going from a career in hospitality management with obscure working hours and not knowing what a weekend was, to the 9-5 life. Turns out, it was the best career decision I have ever made.

This summer I was offered the position of Assistant Office Manager for Express Recruitment. Little did I know what I was getting myself into…

Here’s the top 3 things I’ve discovered since becoming the new Office Manager:

1. Recruitment is a CHALLENGING INDUSTRY

After 6 weeks of intensive training, I have learnt that the recruitment sector is a fast-paced environment which requires a lot of patience, hard work and dedication. On top of all this, the industry still battles negative connotations about the use of recruitment agencies which are UNTRUE. There are SOOOOO many benefits to using an agency for both employers and job-seekers and I can confirm that we do have YOUR best interest at heart! We have people on the other end of the phone who will work endlessly to secure that placement and make the process hassle-free whilst doing so.

2. Office work culture is great!

If you’re about to start your first office job, you need to know that office culture is very different from other working environments. You will actually need to know what you’re talking about and care about it, opposed to upselling those homemade freshly cooked lasagnes that DEFINITELY didn’t come into the restaurant frozen… You also get a proper break, a normal sleep pattern and the social life that goes around that which is fantastic! But you will definitely be using your brain more so prepare for information overload. You might think it won’t stick at first, but you’ll learn a lot more than you might think.

The first few weeks of my office life has brought many surprises like any new job, but the biggest surprise was the amount of time and effort that is dedicated to each staff member. Express has a great work culture where the staff are appreciated and recognised for their achievements. The personable attitude towards employees and treating everyone as a person and not just an employee is refreshing and exactly what I look for in my career. I’m a great believer that if you look after your staff, they will look after you and I will ensure that belief is reflected in my role in management. If you have already been in a position of management, your leadership style may change slightly as you tailor it to a new environment, but those people management skills will apply exactly the same.

3. You get to help real people build their career

The best part about working in recruitment is the rewarding nature of being able to help people get their first step on the career ladder, get back into employment or land their dream jobs, and I am proud to be a part of the process! Diving into something new is always a challenge, but from my experience taking that leap has had a lot more positives to my life than negatives.
